Advancing Mathematical Frontiers Through Research Excellence

The Ph.D. in Mathematics at BITS Pilani provides a rigorous, intellectually rich graduate experience to candidates who love mathematics and research to innovate. The programme fosters advanced mathematical skills by mixing coursework content, seminars and an active community of scholars, which combine important theoretical foundations with opportunities for contemporary applications. Research opportunities are available in various areas, including algebra, topology and number theory, as well as in differential equations, graph theory, mathematical modelling and cryptography, all of which prepare candidates to address questions in both pure and applied mathematics research. Graduates will have the intellectual depth and institutional experience characterised by academics to initiate careers in academic institutions, industry or interdisciplinary environments in mathematics and other fields of science and technology.

Students offered an Institute fellowship will receive ₹37,000 per month. The fellowship may be enhanced to ₹40,000 or ₹42,000 after two years, based on performance.

Institute Fellows will also receive a contingency amount of ₹20,000 per year. Students admitted through Sponsored Projects will receive fellowship support in accordance with the funding agency guidelines.

You Asked.
We Answered.

At BITS Pilani, the PhD in Mathematics covers pure and applied areas. You’ll work with a supervisor, do original research and write and defend a thesis.

At BITS Pilani you can prove results in algebra/graph theory or tackle PDEs and topology, and apply maths to control, modelling, cryptography and numerical methods—often leading to papers and software.

You’ll usually need an MSc in Mathematics (or a closely related degree) with at least 60%. If you hold UGC-NET, GATE, an M.Phil or a JRF, the written test is often waived for that cycle.

You start with department-set coursework, pass the qualifier, defend your proposal, then carry out original research. You finish by writing and defending your thesis at BITS Pilani.

Shortlisted candidates are evaluated via a written test (unless exempted) and an interview assessing math knowledge, research potential and fit with departmental thrust areas.

Yes. BITS Pilani accepts part-time PhD applicants. You’ll need department approval and proof that your workplace or lab supports your research.

The Ph.D. in Mathematics is offered across BITS Pilani’s campuses- Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad.

Yes. Eligible full-time Ph.D. scholars can access fellowships- ₹37,000 monthly, rising to ₹40,000–₹42,000 post two years, with ₹20,000 yearly contingency. Project scholars get support as per funding norms.

Applications must be submitted via BITS Admission’s Ph.D portal, during announced cycles. Admission notifications, test/interview schedules and campus preferences are posted there.

Many graduates take research or teaching routes, while others join R& D, data science, cryptography or modelling teams in industry. At BITS Pilani, faculty referrals and alumni connections often help with interviews.
