Department of Biological Sciences
Advancing India’s Future Through Biological Sciences
Established in 1969 through the merger of the Botany and Zoology departments, the Department of Biological Sciences at BITS Pilani reflects the Institute’s integrated approach to modern science and technology. The department is engaged in high-quality teaching and research across diverse areas of contemporary biology. To strengthen interdisciplinary research and training, the Centre for Biotechnology was created with expertise from Biology, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Computer Science, and formally launched in 1999 with support from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Bethesda, USA. The department offers M.Sc., M.E. and Ph.D. programmes in biological and biotechnological sciences.

Our Vision
and Mission
Vision: We are committed to achieving high standards in both research and teaching and to become a sought-after destination for highly motivated students as well as faculty. The Department aspires to lead in the areas of diagnostics and prevention, infectious and non-infectious human diseases and sustainable agriculture and environment.
Mission: To maintain high standards of teaching by innovating pedagogy, instilling in students the ability to be lifelong learners and continually upgrading the program curriculum of both first degree and higher degree courses in line with international standards of biology education and to meet the requirement of industry and research community..

The BITS Edge in Biological Sciences
- Internationally recognised faculty across diverse areas of expertise
- Advanced laboratory facilities enabling cutting-edge research
- Robust support from national research funding bodies
- A collaborative academic ecosystem focused on impact-driven outcomes
Research
The department undertakes industry-sponsored contract research with defined scope, timelines and deliverables. Working as an extension of the sponsor’s scientific and engineering teams, faculty collaborate closely to tailor projects to specific needs. All outcomes remain strictly proprietary, with quality and satisfaction reviews conducted upon completion.
