The Mechanical Engineering Department dates back to 1946 and is one of the oldest at BITS Pilani. The department focuses on research that benefits industry, society as a whole and the environment. The department’s legacy and futuristic approach attracts some of the brightest minds across the country. Research emphasis is across First Degree, Higher Degree and Ph.D. levels. The Mechanical Engineering Department at BITS Pilani has a rich heritage. It was renamed from ‘Group’ to ‘Department’ in October 2010. The Department takes pride in the achievements of its alumni, who have shone in various walks of life.

Department of Mechanical Engineering Edge
- The Department boasts an over 80% placement rate, with top companies such as Daimler,
Tata, Hyundai and Siemens actively recruiting. - 100% of students receive either fee waivers or stipends,
advanced infrastructure. - Students have access to advanced labs covering Material Science, MEMS,
Robotics, Thermal Sciences and Smart Buildings. - Faculty of the department are some of the top-ranked scientists with expertise in robotics,
finite element methods, machine tool engineering and more.

Srikanta Routroy is a Professor and Department Head, Mechanical Engineering Department, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus. Under his belt, he has degrees like Ph.D. that he got from BITS Pilani in 2005 on "Development of Decision Support Systems for the Design of Supply Chain Management Drivers". Dr. Routroy joined BITS Pilani in October 2000 and progressed through ranks of Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor, being promoted to Professor in July 2018.
