Humanities at Pilani: Shaping Minds Since 1943

The study of humanities and languages in Pilani began as early as 1943, when the Birla Intermediate College became a Degree College. The undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in the humanities began in 1964 with the creation of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science as a degree-granting university. Since then, BITS Pilani has had sustained Moulding in the humanities. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is primarily responsible for research and teaching involved in this study. The study of humanities was part of the founding vision of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. This enabling vision, represented by the lotus at the heart of the BITS Pilani emblem, continues to guide the Institute in its current plan document, Vision 2020: Mission 2015. This vision envisions an ever-greater emphasis on the humanities in the curriculum, requiring study of humanities courses in all degree programmes.
