Building the foundation of change

At BITS Pilani, we understand that when roots are grounded in strong values, the branches grow with confidence and remain steadfast. Following that principle, BITS across all its campuses conducts several initiatives and activities to raise awareness of societal issues, helping students understand how their contributions can add to the collective impact. At BITS Pilani, being socially responsible runs parallel with academic excellence. BITS’ students, faculty, and alumni have initiated and nurtured impactful organisations and societies dedicated to community development, education, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and welfare.

Social Responsibility Initiative by BITS Goa

Established in February 2020, The BITS Goa Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship Society (BGIIES) is a registered Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Its offices are located at BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus, Zuarinagar, Goa, India.

The Society was set up with an aim to:
  • To promote, encourage, and sustain activities and programs contributing to innovation, incubation & entrepreneurship education and development.
  • To establish and administer Business Incubators (BIs) throughout the country, giving an impetus to innovation-based startups.

The BITS BIRAC BioNEST incubator at BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus, is supported by the society at present.

NIRMAAN – A Student-Led Movement for Change

Nirmaan is an organisation founded by students of BITS Pilani, with a passion to fulfil their responsibility towards the less privileged people of society. A few BITSians initiated Nirmaan in February 2005. It is a Non-Governmental and Nonprofit Organisation that relentlessly works towards a poverty-free, knowledge-powered, and economically empowered nation by providing education and livelihood opportunities for underprivileged people. At BITS, we believe that knowledge is a fundamental right and essential for citizens to live free from poverty and other societal issues.

Impact & Recognition
  • Supported by UN Habitat Youth Fund, aligned with the Millennium Development Goals.
  • The Vocational Training Project at Warangal was developed with support from BITS.aid, including planning for logistics, infrastructure, and faculty requirements.
  • Today, Nirmaan operates across its campuses in Pilani, Goa, and Dubai, continuing its mission with scale and passion.

NSS BITS Pilani – Volunteering for a Sustainable Future

NSS BITS Pilani is driven by enthusiastic volunteers, supported by teachers who guide comprehensive and sustainable development models. In addition to the main goals of community development, NSS also aims to instil service values in students and ultimately make them responsible citizens dedicated to improving their country and the world.

PIEDS – Pilani Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Society

Pilani Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Society was initiated to bring ideas into action. The core agenda of the PIEDS initiative is to inspire, nurture, and grow, thereby bringing the ideas to reality through the various services it offers.

PARC – Pilani Resource Centre (An Alumni Trust Initiative)

PARC focuses on community development in and around Pilani, Rajasthan, through an ecosystem for skill training, job creation, health, education, entrepreneurship, women's rights and many such initiatives.

“PARC today has made a huge impact. You should all be extremely proud of what PARC has done for this neighbourhood, the beautiful ecosystem that supports the society, the underprivileged, and people in need of critical support. PARC has accomplished something absolutely outstanding and remarkable, unlike anything else. Keep doing it.”

– Dr Souvik Bhattacharyya, Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani (quoted from an interaction with him on BITS Day of 2020)

SSMS – Society for Student Mess Services

The Society for Student Mess Services (SSMS) is an official body, registered under the Rajasthan Societies Act (1958), which is empowered to manage the day-to-day affairs of the BITS Student Messes. It employs nearly 200 mess workers and caters to the needs of over 3,500 students at BITS-Pilani, Pilani Campus.

The Society directly handles all financial transactions and operational management of all seven messes on campus and one all-night canteen. The Society has currently partnered with Sodexo, an international food service company, which has been hired as consultants to monitor, review, and suggest changes to the system. This is an attempt to streamline the entire food service chain on campus and ensure that students can look forward to receiving good food at affordable rates, supplied by a professionally run body. Though all students registered in BITS Pilani are de facto members of this society, the day-to-day operational aspects and all other major decisions are overseen by the Governing Council (SSMS). The Governing Council comprises elected representatives from each of the messes, four nominated members from the AMC (Advisory and Monitoring Committee), two nominees from BITS Pilani, and four additional members. The main post-holders in the Council include the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Society. Every student on campus is encouraged to voice his/her opinions and suggestions towards the improvement of the mess system. To indulge in clichés, the Society is, after all, an initiative of the students, by the students, for the students of BITS Pilani.

Sustainability & Social Responsibility Initiatives at BPDC

Dubai Campus actively supports and promotes sustainability and environmental responsibility values. Through various initiatives, BPDC creates awareness about eco-friendly practices in the community.

Earth Day Celebrations

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 via various initiatives to make the community and students realise the importance of it and to be a constant reminder of saving the earth through mindful efforts every day.

Events organised

Word Search on our social media platforms, where students had to comment as many words as they could find to win exciting prizes.

The club also took the initiative of planting a sapling on the campus premises to mark Earth Day.

Earth Hour Celebrations

BITS Pilani Dubai Campus joined people across the world in showing support for our mother Earth and raising awareness by turning off non-essential lights on 26.3. 2021.

Energy and Water Conservation Awareness Drive

Awareness messages promoting energy and water conservation are displayed across the campus to encourage the BITS fraternity to adopt more sustainable living practices.

Awareness Drive on Food Wastage

At BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, we understand that food wastage is not only a humanitarian concern but also an environmental problem. Approximately 6%-8% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced if we stopped food waste.

Hence, at Dubai Campus, we try to instil values that go a long way through various activities that create awareness about ‘Take what you’ll eat. Eat what you take.” The activities could be just posters around the hostels or organising seminars around them.

Operation Energy-saving LED lights

LED lamps are more energy-efficient, durable, and emit less heat. By replacing conventional bulbs with LED lighting systems, BPDC saved a whopping 129,121 W. The carbon intensity of electricity production in the UAE is 0.42 kg CO2/kWh, and hence we are saving 54.23 kg CO2 per hour.

Greener Alternative for Plastic Bags

Paper bags, being biodegradable, are far more sustainable than plastic bags. Students made paper bags using newspaper and donated them to the Mini Mart (grocery store at BPDC) and the Canteen for use. This initiative was active till February 2020. It was suspended due to the pandemic.

Operation Reuse

Donation Drives for Used Clothes

Recycling and reusing of clothes and other textiles create a huge impact in reducing Greenhouse gases and ecological footprint. Every Year, the Social and Environment Club of BPDC collects clothes and bedding and donates them to the Emirates Red Crescent.

The Book Room (Reuse of Text Books)

The production of printed books has an enormous ecological and carbon footprint due to excessive water usage, fossil fuel consumption, and paper consumption. Printed papers in landfills generate an enormous amount of greenhouse gases. To mitigate the negative impacts, used textbooks are made available for students on the BPDC campus to borrow instead of purchasing new books.

Usable papers from the exam booklets were collected and made into scribbling pads, which are distributed among students, Staff, and faculty every year.
